On December 9th, it’s bring your undergraduate student to The Pub Club day. Before we dive into Holiday Food & Fun, we will be taking some time to hone our mentoring skills. Miranda (Day lab) and Bethany (He lab) will lead the discussion, but the focus will be all of us graduate students and post docs helping our undergraduate students learn how to strategically manage their careers. The discussion will include useful networking tools, like LinkedIn and presenting research at conferences, as well as how to properly manage your online identity. We will also be going through the AAAS Individual Development Plan (IDP) with them so they can learn how to use this tool as they progress through the next phases of their careers.
To prepare for this session, please take a minute to have a one-on-one chat with undergraduates you supervise or who work in your lab about the value of strategic career management and encourage them to participate. We will be sending a Doodle Poll around for those undergraduate students who are interested but cannot attend on December 9th. Please have students who are interested email Bethany or Miranda by Friday, December 2 so we can be sure to include them in the poll.
