Seminar of Interest (Mar 2): Dr. Christine Smart
March 2, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Dr. Christine Smart from Cornell University will share her research on “A Tale of Two Phytophthoras: Life With and Without Sex.” This is a rare opportunity for us to be updated with the latest developments associated with a different microbial pathogen model. To facilitate our science to be “cutting-edge,” we must pay attention not just to particular discoveries in our field but to the wider research of the community.
Christine’s research seeks to understand: “(1) Vegetable pathology and disease control specializing in bacterial and oomycete pathogens; (2) Population structure and diversity of oomycete and bacterial plant pathogens; and (3) Detection and identification of vegetable pathogens.”
Christine also has extensive community involvement, which is important in order to communicate our ideas more effectively towards a broader and more diverse audience. Her lab website states, “The first goal is to work with conventional, transitional and organic growers, seed companies, chemical companies and private consultants to improve vegetable disease management while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The second goal is to develop and promote partnerships between Cornell University and elementary school educators and students to increase awareness of agriculture.”
